March 9-11, 2012 The actual ride is on Saturday, March 10th starting in the small Danish town called Solvang, in the middle of stunning wine country, nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley (near Santa Barbara). Remember the movie Sideways ? That's Solvang; a quaint little town with lots of shops, perfect for strolling around. Beautiful architecture -- old-European style with windmills everywhere (the Dutch touch). A bakery on every corner! The drive is absolutely gorgeous with spectacular ocean views on one side and rolling, lush green hills on the other.
As a team, we rent a huge Estate House and all bunk together! Dinner on Friday night is usually Lasagna that is served anytime after 6ish or as soon as you get there if you get in late. We will pick-up our ride packages and stroll through the expo scooping up riding gear deals.
On Saturday, we get up bright and early to our own private start-line, then ride through the actual town to join in with the organized a rolling start, (which helps diffuse the other 5,000 century riders on the course). Whether you are riding the 100 or the 50, we all start together and line the course with our WB Team Jersey. Soon after the first SAG stop, approximately mile 25, we will split-up and send the 50 milers on their way back home as we set out to finish the 100! Our house is just off the ride course so we don’t actually go back into Solvang town – just head to the food and Jacuzzi! It is always a party on Saturday night as we relax and enjoy the day’s accomplishment!
On Sunday morning we all pitch in for a big breakfast spread, then clean-up and head out. For some this is a drive straight home, but for others it is a slow winery filled drive.
